We recently wrote about how the school board for Prince George County, Maryland, was considering a policy that would claim the copyright of everything produced by both students and faculty at the various schools in the district. That seemed extreme in so many ways. Some folks have set up a site called Don’t Copyright Me, in which they’re asking people to sign a petition to be sent to the school board, telling them not to take the copyrights from students and teachers.
While this may seem like a small deal because it involves a single school district, the larger concern is that it actually becomes a bigger deal in the long term, as other school districts may follow suit:
Copyright is getting out of control. Prince George’s County is one of the top 25 school systems in the country. If this policy goes into effect, it could set a terrible precedent at a time when quality education is needed more than ever. Students and teachers deserve the same rights as everyone else. With this policy, a high school student could get a takedown notice from their own school for posting a video they made for class on YouTube.
Hopefully the school board realizes this would be a mistake.

I know Stargate fans are desperately waiting to hear when and if a new Stargate series might be coming around. Well, I have good news and bad news: The good news is that the newest story in the Stargate universe will begin in March! Back in January, William Shatner struck up a Twitter conversation with Commander Chris Hadfield, a Canadian astronaut who is serving aboard the International Space Station. This morning, they had a follow up conversation in which Shatner called the station via phone and Hadfield responded via live video feed.

This is the Imperial Star Destroyer birthday cake made by Lorenzo Wood (links to Flickr album of the entire build) for his son Alexander. The cake sits atop a custom base Lorenzo made that had light up windows and BONUS thruster flare effects. There’s a video of those doing their thing after the jump. A video of me doing my thing? Subway construction workers in Thessaloniki, Greece, have uncovered a golden olive branch that dates back approximately 2,300 years. Located at what will someday be the Republic Station stop, the wreath was found inside a large, box-like Macedonian tomb — and it was still on the head of a buried female body. In 2011, we posted about “The Bay Lights,” an upcoming project by artist Leo Villareal that would cover the west span of the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge with an impressive art LED light installation. The project is nearly ready for its two-year stint on the bridge, starting with its Grand Lighting ceremony on March 5, 2013 at 9 PM.
Eight times the scale of the Eiffel Tower’s 100th Anniversary lighting, The Bay Lights spans 1.8 miles, consisting of 25,000 energy-efficient white LEDs, individually designed and programmed, sparkling in an array of never-repeating designs each evening for two years.
