Robot Overview: iSobot With An Attitude (and Weapons)
Paxshikai has posted a cool and somewhat disturbing video of an i-SOBOT wielding a large arsenal of weapons.
Here’s hoping that more people will continue to hack some interesting (and hopefully not so lethal) tools for our robotic friends. When we get done with the VEX Robotics season I may have to try my hand at […] Continue reading
Kids Will Love the Virtual Toys at Poisson Rouge
With a lot of kids’ time so planned out these days, with their fun and learning both quite regimented, it is important to let them just be free to explore interests on their own. There are lots of ways to do this off-line, but some free form places exist online as well.
One of my kids’ […] Continue reading
Best of the Geek Decade – Toys and Videogames
This list is short on physical toys, except for the ever-popular Legos, and long on videogames. Did we mention our kids are geeks?
One interesting element: The various videogame versions of Star Wars are well-loved. The movies, which didn’t make that list, not so much.
Best Toys:
Bakugan (Ken’s kids) More dueling manga-inspired fun!
Nerf Vulcan (Ken’s kids) […] Continue reading
Asus Disney NetPal Review
I was recently sent a Disney Netpal for review. My choices were “Blue Magic” which is dark blue with tiny Mickey heads, or “Princess Pink.” Figuring on getting my son’s input, I opted for “Blue Magic” to avoid any hassles.
Hardware:
Here are the Hardware Specs of the unit I received:
1.6 GHz Atom Processor
1 Gig of RAM

Marble Raceways Are a Perfect Gift, but Which One is Right for Your Geeklet?
Marble raceways are a near perfect Geeklet toy — lots of physics and engineering lessons to be learned, no batteries, etc… Yet, sometimes the frustration factor is just too high. We’ve got a magnetic one that sticks to the dishwasher, for example, that loves to deposit marbles under said dishwasher.
The key is finding the right […] Continue reading
Rubik’s 360: a Puzzle That Will Spin Your Mind
I was always a fan of the Rubik’s Cube: my dad played with one when I was younger. While we learned to make a checkerboard and a “six-spot” pattern with it when it was solved, it wasn’t until my dad brought home a heavily-Xeroxed, hand-drawn guide that I was finally able to solve it. That […] Continue reading
So Your Kid Wants to be a Civil Rights Lawyer
Our Courts is a web-based education project designed to teach students civics and inspire them to be active participants in our democracy. They have produced two video games to help educate our kids about the legal system. Being the resident GeekDad-lawyer, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to promote video games about the legal system.
In Supreme […] Continue reading
GeekDad Attends Magic: The Gathering’s Community Cup Challenge
Last month, Wizards of the Coast (WotC) graciously invited me to participate in a Magic: The Gathering tournament with an intriguing premise — pit eight bloggers and members of the Magic forums against eight Wizards staffers, with the victors getting a big shiny silver cup and bragging rights. The arena: Wizards’ Magic: The Gathering Online.
The […] Continue reading
Jonas Brothers and A Christmas Carol: Two Disney DS Games Both Earn A “Meh”
As we work through the last of the 2009 game review pile, my kids gave a pair of Disney Interactive DS titles a whirl: A Christmas Carol and JONAS. Both are based on Disney properties, one the recently released Disney adaptation of a classic Christmas movie and the other a Disney Channel show. Neither offers […] Continue reading
