Hugo and Nebula Award winning author Robert Silverberg was born on January 15, 1935 in Brooklyn, New York. To date, he has written over 1200 novels, novelettes, articles and short stories; mostly in science-fiction and fantasy, but occasionally in other genres, including historical non-fiction and erotica. His early years as an author were so prolific that he was forced to publish under a variety of pseudonyms (including Randall Garrett, David Osborne, Ivar Jorgenson, and Calvin M. Knox) in order not to saturate the market.
Silverberg’s first novel, entitled Revolt on Alpha C, was published in 1955 and was written for a young-adult audience. Some of his major works include Nightwings, Tower of Glass and Shadrach in the Furnace. He is perhaps best known for the Majipoor Series of books, beginning with the 1980 novel Lord Valentine’s Castle, which take place on a large planet colonized by no less than six different species.
He currently resides in San Francisco with his wife Karen Haber.
